Our Mission
Californians for Affordable Food believes that the foundation of good nutrition is simple: having access to affordable, nutritious food. In a state where 27% of households struggle to put food on the table, we’re advocating against policies that will add to this hardship by increasing the cost of groceries and for policies that increase food access.
Our Vision
We are committed to a California where healthy, affordable food choices are within reach for all—no exceptions. That means empowering families to make those choices, not hindering them with unnecessary higher costs. It means focusing on real challenges—hunger, economic strain, and community health—not chasing redundant policies that miss the mark.
Our Priorities
Affordability First:
Grocery prices in California have soared 28% in five years, with families spending $1,200 a month—41% more if they have kids. We advocate for policies that protect Californians’ access to affordable everyday products because no one should pay $80 more per week than a family in Wisconsin for the same basics.
Fighting Food Insecurity:
One in five Californians is food insecure. We champion anti-hunger programs like CalFresh, increased SNAP/EBT benefits, and relief from the Golden State’s high cost of living.
Healthy Choices, Not Higher Costs:
We support nutritious food access through Medi-Cal, hospitals, and solutions to food deserts—but reject unnecessary, California-only regulations that drive up prices without evidence.
Protecting Schools & Families:
We stand against mandates that strain school budgets or make it harder to feed kids, especially with federal funding at risk.
What We Oppose
Duplicative Regulations:
The FDA already oversees food safety. California-only rules on ingredients would shrink options, raise grocery bills, and hurt housing-insecure families and disaster response—all without solving voters’ top concerns: cost of living, housing, and the environment.
Misplaced Priorities:
California already has a safe food supply. Lawmakers should focus on other pressing issues and tackle affordability, homelessness, and health crises, rather than push policies that would unnecessarily increase food costs without meaningfully improving health.
